Asbestos Notification

Several years ago the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) was passed by the United States Congress. This Act of Congress detailed how school districts must comply with regulations regarding the handling of asbestos-containing materials in their buildings.

As a result of the AHERA law, the Hill City School District 51-2 elected to remove all asbestos-containing materials from the school buildings. Thus during the months of June and July, 1989, all asbestos-containing materials were removed from buildings owned by Hill City School District 51-2. Part of this law requires that each school keep a copy of its “Asbestos Control Plan” on file and that this plan be available for public viewing.

It is the intention of the Hill City School District to keep all building occupants, as well as the public, informed periodically as to the exact nature of what was done to deal with the asbestos problem. An asbestos inspection conducted June 8, 2011 confirms “all asbestos has been removed from the school buildings.” The public and school personnel are advised that the “Asbestos Management Plan” is available for public review during normal business hours at the Hill City School District Administration Office, 488 Main Street, Hill City, South Dakota.
